Miss Saigon
Sunday, April 27th, 2008 06:40 pmWent to see Miss Saigon with the Discovery Tours. It is a group, mainly designed for older women, but no one cares if I go, plenty of room, and it is fun being the youngest on board. They go all sorts of places. Plays, garden shows, week long vacation trips, etc.
I've had this one scheduled for several months, and was hoping I wouldn't forget about it.
The play was in Tacoma, and we had to stop several times to pick people up (there are these set locations where everyone meets to board and my pick-up was at 10:20am
On the last stop, one of the ladies was all 'We have a youngster on board!' and poked at one of her friends to point at me o.o;;
So we went to this Chinese restaurant first....it was a little private one that barely had seating for all of us (there were 30 of us).
I am not fond of Chinese food, so I hardly ate anything. The ladies I sat with were nice. One annouced that 'husbands, work, and politics were off limits.' We were silent for a moment, then she announced we could talk about pets. So we all jabbered about our critters for awhile.
My fortune cookie read 'You have a wise spirit, an advanced intellect and faith in human nature.' ummm...okie.
So, play was at 2. We got there at 1:30. Our tickets were passed out randomly to us on the bus, going by people who had groups and needed to sit together first. I got really nice seats, Row D seat 18. It was pretty close to the band, so I watched them warming up to keep entertained.
Play was pretty good, but I had a hard time hearing the singing. Band was drowning them out some, plus I heard there were speaker difficulties, so that wasn't helping. At one point, the speaker cracked and everyone on stage jumped. I was getting so I had to try to read the lips to help me understand what was said.
A few other technical glitches--2 times this gun was supposed to be shot, and both times, it only clicked. But it worked the second time the trigger was pulled, thankfully.
During intermission, these two guys behind me were talking about the gun misfires, and one said that he had been to a production of Oliver and the same thing happened, except the actor had to holler out BANG! (I had a hard time not laughing...didn't want them to know I was listening in.) Then they started talking about American Idol. Their predictions are the two Davids for the top two, but they think Cook will win because David A. 'is too narrow.' I think they mean he needs to broaden up on what he sings.
The girl who played Kim was excellent. 20 years old. The boy who played her son was okay, but a little...just there. Like a prop. Thuy was great, and when he died, he spent like 2 minutes with his eyes wide open, unblinking.
I enjoyed it, but if the sound had been working properly, I would have really loved it. I'm not familiar with any of the songs from this play, so it all was new to me.
Got dropped off at 7:30 and I went in to Walmart (my drop off point) and I bought some food from the McDonalds there, and went to find a rolling pin. Mom's old one is kinda...crappy and old ;) Got a nice heavy one for 5 bucks. I want to make some cinn. rolls tomorrow. Before I had been using a cup to flatten them down, and it doesn't work quite the same ^__^
Yeah. That was my yesterday ;)
