My Summer of You (2026)

Great Chemistry, Soft Spoons, and the Eternal "Will They/Won't They".

My Summer of You delivers a quintessential Japanese BL experience: slow-burn angst, lush cinematic visuals, and the timeless comfort of two high school film nerds finding each other. Adapted from Furuya Nagisa’s beloved manga, the 12-episode drama hits the ground running with a classic pairing—the effortlessly popular, secretly complex heartthrob Saeki Chiharu (Mokudai Kazuto) meets the ordinary, movie-obsessed Toda Wataru (Oku Tomoya).

What begins as a shared passion for cinema quickly morphs into an intense emotional dynamic, complete with a hidden agenda and a mid-series dramatic climax that lands every single emotional beat from the manga's first volume.

Where It Shines
Incredible Lead Chemistry: The static between Oku Tomoya and Mokudai Kazuto is genuine. Mokudai comfortably pulls off bleached blonde hair—a rare feat in live-action manga adaptations—and the close-up camera work highlights every subtle, charged look between the leads.
Strong First Half: The high school arc is tight, evocative, and captures the bittersweet nature of adolescent longing perfectly.
Visual Aesthetic: True to its title, the series nails the sun-drenched, melancholic summer atmosphere.

Where It Stumbles
College Arc Drag: Transitioning into the second volume's college timeline slows the pacing to a crawl. The prolonged "will they/won't they" loop begins to test your patience rather than build tension.
Overly Safe Finale: After 12 episodes of intense romantic buildup, the climax pulls its punches. Ending the key intimate scene with a timid fade-to-black feels like a missed opportunity for a script that had the performance caliber to be far more daring.

The Verdict: My Summer of You is a faithful, beautifully shot adaptation that ultimately plays it a little too safe. It is well worth the watch for Mokudai and Oku’s undeniable dynamic, even if you are left wishing the production had trusted its actors enough to take a bigger leap.

HEA. Watch on GagaOOLala. Heat Level: 3/6.

Are the Sexy Buttocks Not Good? (2026)

Adapted from Hatoya Tama’s manga Ecchi na Oshiri ja Dame desu ka?, this 2026 live-action BL drama brings Hisaki Ainosuke and Okumi Hideaki’s age-gap romance to the screen with warmth and emotional sincerity. While the adaptation succeeds as a heartfelt character study, it stumbles by dialing back the source material's signature comedic energy, leaving its romantic beats significantly stronger than its erotic ones.

Outside the intimate moments, the central dynamic works exceptionally well. Ainosuke’s growth from a protected student to a partner who actively wants to stand beside Okumi gives the narrative a satisfying emotional core. Okumi-san himself is a standout—he is not only a charismatic older lead, but his character also offers a poignant glimpse into the subtle weight and social restrictions faced by a generation of gay men in Japan.

Where the adaptation falters is in its handling of intimacy and side plots. The original manga balances its explicit scenes with high-energy comedy, preventing the tone from feeling too heavy. By muting that humor, the live-action intimate scenes occasionally drift into awkwardness. The final bed scene is a prime example: transitioning straight from a sweet conversation about the future to Ainosuke positioning himself on all fours feels jarringly mechanical without softer intermediate beats like kissing. Additionally, secondary characters like Uchida and Teramachi suffer from aggressive editing, leaving their storylines abruptly truncated without proper closure.

If you look past the clumsy passionate scenes, the core drama remains a charming, sincere romance driven by a magnetic older lead. Fans of the manga may miss the original's playful energy, but as a grounded age-gap story, the emotional beats still manage to land.

HEA. Watch on GagaOOLala. Heath Level: 5/6.

Walking in Your Tracks by Tatsumi KIFUU

This heartfelt, emotional boys love drama with disability representation explores themes of grief and depression.

Ren Kisaki has lived his life alone, writing novels from his wheelchair. Suffocated by help and frustrated by his perceived helplessness, he repeatedly pushes others away to the point that his caregivers have all but given up on him. That is, until the day newbie caregiver Rintaro Maki arrives on his doorstep.

The kind and perceptive Rintaro — who sees Ren for himself, not only his condition — offers a connection Ren had long thought himself incapable of. Pushing out of his comfort zone, Ren finally starts opening up...
giving him the strength to courageously confront his past and pursue, for the first time, his own story.

My Rate: 7 (amzn.to/3UtFs80)

Tatsumi Kifuu’s Walking in Your Tracks (Ashiato o Fumishimete) offers a deeply moving, emotionally resonant drama that tackles difficult themes of grief, depression, and disability representation with striking sensitivity and nuance.
Ren Kisaki has built a fortress of solitude, living entirely alone while writing novels from his wheelchair. Overwhelmed by a sense of helplessness and suffocated by pity or well-meaning intrusion, Ren has systematically pushed everyone away until local caregivers have practically given up on him.
Enter Rintaro Maki, a perceptive, kind-hearted rookie caregiver who shows up on Ren's doorstep. Unlike others who view Ren solely through the lens of his disability, Rintaro sees the person beneath, offering a genuine bridge to human connection.
With Rintaro’s patient support, Ren slowly steps out of his emotional comfort zone. As he begins to open up, he finds the courage to confront the heavy shadows of his past and finally take ownership of his own life and narrative.
The manga handles disability with refreshing realism and empathy, avoiding overly sanitized tropes or inspirational cliches. It explores the psychological weight of physical isolation and chronic frustration with raw honesty.
The romance develops organically out of a foundation of mutual respect, healing, and emotional safety. Watching Ren transition from defensive hostility to vulnerable acceptance is profoundly rewarding.
The pacing leans into quiet, reflective moments, using Ren's background as a writer to mirror his internal processing of grief and self-worth.
Because the story dives deep into clinical depression, grief, and trauma, it can be a heavy read. Readers looking for lighthearted, low-angst romance may find the emotional weight intense.
The journey from reluctant client-and-caregiver to romantic partners takes time and emotional labor, which requires patience for those who prefer fast-paced plot progression.
Best Suited For: Fans of deep emotional dramas, psychological growth, realistic disability representation, and stories where healing and romance go hand in hand.
It stands out in the BL genre for its mature, sensitive exploration of adult vulnerability and caregiving dynamics.

The Tailor and the Rich Heir by Kamome Ooshima

Come back when you're an adult.

"I've always loved you!"
"...I know."
Shuichiro, the son of a rich family, has been in unrequited love for many years.
The target of his love is Akira Katayama, the sexy owner of Tailor Katayama, a custom-made tailor shop.
They have a large age difference and Katayama won't give him the time of day... No matter how desperately Shuichiro tries to get his attention, he's always waved away.
However, his attempts bore fruit when Katayama allowed him a physical relationship...

This is an impregnable romance between a pure young man and a stubborn mature adult.

My Rate: 7 (amzn.to/4xzeTNy)

Kamome Ooshima’s The Tailor and the Rich Heir (Suitter to Reijou / The Tailor and the Rich Heir) delivers a classic, high-tension age-gap romance that pits relentless youthful devotion against stubborn, guarded maturity.
Shuichiro is the privileged son of a wealthy family, but his life has been defined by one long, agonizing unrequited love. His heart belongs entirely to Akira Katayama, the striking, mature owner of the bespoke custom shop Tailor Katayama.
Despite years of passionate pursuits, declarations of love, and desperate attempts to catch his attention, Shuichiro is routinely treated like an impatient kid and brushed aside with a classic dismissal: "Come back when you're an adult."
Persistence eventually yields results when Katayama finally gives in, allowing a physical relationship to form between them. But crossing that barrier doesn't automatically solve their differences, leading to an emotionally charged tug-of-war between a fiercely devoted young man and a stubborn older tailor.
The power play between youth and experience is handled with sharp dramatic flair. Shuichiro's earnest, all-consuming devotion contrasts sharply with Katayama's attempts to maintain professional and emotional distance.
The backdrop of a custom tailor shop adds a wonderful sense of tactile intimacy. The imagery of measuring tapes, fine fabrics, and structured suits enhances the physical tension between the two characters.
Rather than an immediate happily-ever-after, the story leans into the friction of an age gap and differing life stages, making the emotional breakthroughs feel hard-earned.
Readers who grow frustrated by characters who willfully push away genuine affection or rely heavily on the "I'm protecting you by keeping my distance" trope might find Katayama's initial stubbornness a bit trying.
Because of the age gap and the initial dynamic of the older mentor figure dismissing the younger suitor, the early relationship milestones cross conventional boundaries that require some narrative suspension of disbelief.
Best Suited For: Fans of age-gap romance, stubborn-older-man tropes, devoted younger lovers, and stories with a sleek, tailored aesthetic.
It plays wonderfully into the classic dynamic where the person who claims they will never fall ends up being the most thoroughly undone by love.
