Sherlock Series 2, ep 3 Review

I was excited for this episode, given the title and all that it implies, before this season even started. I am so happy that I wasn’t disappointed.
It’s a given. We all know that the ep will end with Sherlock’s death. It was nice to have the counseling session at the start confirm it, then backtrack so we can see how. It shows us how much Sherlock has helped John in his PTSD, and also how Sherlock has hindered him, by pretty much not allowing John to have any other friends. So now that Sherlock is gone, how on earth is he going to cope? New girlfriend? Or lock himself up in an apartment and become bitter? Sherlock had better surface before John gets to that point!
So, Sherlock became a public figure by recovering a painting of Reichenbach Falls. Relief actually that the ‘fall’ won’t be involving The Falls. Limits things a bit and the way things did go down was brilliant.
I don’t think Sherlock really likes all this public attention stuff (yeah yeah, no duh lol). His people skills haven’t improved. In fact, they have gotten worse the less he wants to have to pose for pictures, John by his side schooling him in decency that he will promptly ignore the next time.
THE HAT. I love the hat came back. Thanks to Lestrade! And the amusement of Anderson and Donovan.
Not familiar with the term ‘boffin’, so I looked it up. Cool.
Boffin: A person with knowledge or a skill considered to be complex, arcane, and difficult: "he had a reputation as a tax boffin, a learned lawyer"
Haha, Sherlock had already memorized the exact part of the article that mentions John. Bachelor John Watson *snicker*
“Why’s it (the hat) have two fronts?”
“It’s a Deerstalker”
“You can’t stalk deer with a hat” “Death Frisbee….”
Love the hints about the press turning. John and his foresight.
(Geeze, not even 5 minutes into the ep lol)
*Phone chimes*
“It’s your phone.”
“Mn. It keeps doing that.”
*Mannequin hanging from the ceiling*
John to Sherlock: “So did you just talk to him for a really long time?”
And we have Moriarty. Up to no good as usual. I wonder if his knowledge of Sherlock (damn you, Mycroft) helped him pull off the most complex case of messing with Sherlock. I would like to think not. Props to the annoying asshole. (But would the diamond thing really work?)
I really love the song playing while the trial is being set up. Just adds the perfect feeling to the scene.
“Now let’s give smartass a wide berth.”
“I’ll just be myself.”
“Are you even listening to me?”
I was scare that it was a legit fangirl. Kudos to Sherlock for not leaning away (even though I was in my seat lol)
Kitty: “You and John Watson, just platonic? Shall I put you down as a ‘no’ there as well?”
I believe this was the only reference to them being more than friends (no, the ‘hold my hand’ bit doesn’t count).
“You repel me”
I wonder if she would have been…less mean to Sherlock if he hadn’t been as much of an ass to her. She might not have even been bought by Moriarty at that point.
Haha@Sherlock giving the details of the jury and their various reactions.
Judge: “Do you think you can survive for 5 minutes without showing off?”
Sherlock: *Pauses. Goes to open his mouth*
*Cut to next scene of him shoved in a jail cell*
John chewing him out.
“I can’t just turn it on and off like a tap”
“Not guilty.” Saw it coming, but still, uuugh.
And Sherlock puts tea on.
I just love how drawn out the scene is. Time is taken with it. Each look means something. It just feels so dangerous and like they are both walking on thin ice¸ measuring their every move to avoid a checkmate.
The Final Problem being mentioned. I’m not a bit bank of Sherlock knowledge, but I have read up a bit, so the little things make me happy.
Moriarty: “Honey, you should see me in a crown.”
“Falling is just like flying, except there is a more permanent destination.”
“Never like riddles.”
“Learn to. Because I owe you a fall.”
So blocking John’s card was Mycroft? Subtle does not exist.
I had to Wiki search Diogenes Club, as well. (I did buy a book today that had 5 Holmes stories in it, so I will read at least one of them). Very interesting. Yet very boring sounding. No wonder that one man started to panic and all the nervous looks lol
Sherlock: The Shocking Truth
(Close Friend Richard Brook Tells All)
Super-Sleuth Sherlock Holmes has today been exposed as a fraud in a revelation that will shock his new found base of adoring fans.
Out-of-work actor Richard Brook revealed exclusively to The Sun that he was hired by Holmes in an elaborate deception to fool the British public into believing Holmes had above-average ‘detective skills’.
Brook, who has known Holmes for decades and until recently considered him to be a close friend, said he was at first desperate for the money, but later found he had no….
Sad that Mycroft thinks it funny the thought that Sherlock had any school friends :(
“Knicked all his Smurfs? Broke his action-man?”
The kidnapping case was done really well. Sherlock’s deductions were brilliant (I loved the silhouette of him at the glass, where he pretended to have a gun). I do wonder if the boy really was that smart, or if Moriarty planted the clues. I do wonder how he got the little girl to scream at seeing Sherlock.
I love Molly helping the boys. She is so loyal at times it is painful. Especially after the way Sherlock treated her at the party.
Molly: “Alkaline.”
Sherlock: “Thank you John.”
Molly: “…Molly.”
Molly calling Sherlock on looking sad when John is not looking at him.
“You can see me.”
“I don’t count.” And her whole rambling speech.
“What can I need from you?”
“Nothing. I don’t know.”
I don’t ship them, but she totally deserves a kiss after everything she helped him with.
Like PBPR would really turn up on the shoes. Totally planted to draw Sherlock there.
HHN: Holmes Homeless Network.
John scolding Sherlock for giving props to the kidnapper (calling the Mercury thing ‘neat’).
I do believe Sherlock was going to try to be kinder than normal with the child. Before she started screaming bloody murder.
And Lestrade trying to lighten the situation “I always want to scream when you walk in a room.”
Moriarty’s story of Sir Boast-a-lot. The whole sequence was awesome, with the intercuts of Lestrade and Donovan. Yes, Lestrade had some doubt, but it was fleeting. I wonder what Sherlock had told Lestrade upon their first meeting (there must be fic!)
The surveillance of Sherlock’s room…did anything relating to that come into play?
Lestrade trying to get Sherlock to go to the station, purposely keeping Donovan outside. He did make every attempt to make it easy on Sherlock.
I like that John doesn’t want the world to have the wrong impression of Sherlock.
“No I know you for real. No one can fake being such an annoying dick all the time. “ I love you John!
Lestrade lets on just how much Sherlock has helped them. And he got yelled at :( I love that he called up John to give them a warning.
The burnt gingerbread man. I translate that as ‘You can’t catch me, I’m the gingerbread man.” ;)
It looked like Lestrade was warning Ms. Hudson, not John lol. And John punching the Chief superintendant.
Bad feeling when Sherlock escaped. Playing right into Moriarty’s hands.
Chief: “Get after them, Lestrade!”
*Lestrade really makes no move to do anything.”
I had heard about the handcuff scene while they were filming. Not as…fun…as I wanted it to be, but glad there were no cheap gags. I do love how Sherlock drags John everywhere.
The ‘reveal’ of Moriarty as actor Brook took me like a slap upside the head. It completely broke my brain and I really thought he was for real, until the mention of Sherlock hiring him. Fun seeing him as a twitchy out of control guy.
The look Moriarty passes to Sherlock. So EVIL. I think Sherlock himself was convinced until that look. And Moriarty screeching when Sherlock steps toward him.
“You repel me,” Kitty tossing Sherlock’s words back at him.
Sherlock freezing as he realizes what the end game is going to be. And he goes straight to Molly. Sad that it took something like this to get him to really see her. Him finally admitting that he needs someone.
I still can’t believe how Mycroft could have screwed up this badly. He thinks his power can keep everyone safe. Glad that John doesn’t mince words or let Mycroft off the hook at all…
…and also that Mycroft seems to be genuinely sorry about the turn of events.
Moriarty waits until the exact moment that John leaves before he tells Sherlock to join him.
The return of Staying Alive hahaha!
The acting is so subtle in the rooftop scene. Sherlock’s gradual loss of control. I kept waiting for Moriarty to push him off.
“You’re insane!”
“You’re just getting that now?”
It was so wonderful to see Sherlock smile and laugh. We don’t really see that much of all this season. And the hop skip off the ledge.
The whole speech Sherlock gives Moriarty. Brilliant:
“But I’m not my brother, remember? I’m you, prepared to do anything. Prepared to burn. Prepared to do what ordinary people want you. You want me to shake hands with you in Hell, I shall not disappoint you.”
“No you talk big. No, you’re ordinary. You’re ordinary, you’re on the side of the angels.”
“I may be on the side of the angels, but don’t think for one second that I am one of them.”
When Moriarty took Sherlock’s hand, I thought they would both go over the edge. “As long as I’m alive, you can save your friends.” Then he shoots himself. OMG! I think Sherlock was still hoping he wouldn’t have to use his backup plan. (Also, no way is Moriarty dead.)
The conversation with John from the rooftop *tears*. Sherlock’s last attempt to get John to think of him as a fraud. Even though I have watched the scene a lot, I can still hardly type while it is going on.
Several theories floating about on how Sherlock pulled off his own death. I wonder if it will be completely different to what is being thought.
At the grave site with Ms. Hudson complaining about him to keep from crying. Aww.
“You told me once that you weren’t a hero. Um. There were times I didn’t even think you were human. But let me tell you this, you were the best man and the most human, human being that I’ve ever known and no one will ever convince me that you told me a lie. So there. I was so alone and I owe you so much. Please, there’s just one more thing, one more thing. One more miracle, Sherlock for me. Don’t be...dead. Would you pl... Just for me. Stop it. Stop this. ” *wibble*
I wish we hadn’t seen Sherlock at the end. Obvious he is alive, but I don’t want to have to hate him for watching John go through that unless the next series begins with him stepping out of the trees and saying hello.

Date: 2012-01-17 10:03 am (UTC)Maybe in a week when things fade a bit? It was less of a complicated ep than 2.1, where to me multiple viewings were required just to grasp the plot lol.
Each watch I find different lines that I had missed before.
