Not sure how to search for this...

When you call 911 because you need the police to show up, do you need to give your address, or do they have a way of getting your address?

Not in trouble, just need info for a fic :)

they usually know it (because of the north american numbering plan). they will probably confirm your address, though. :)

How 911 works:

From personal experience, 911 operators can see the address of the phone when it's a land line. The one time I called 911 on a cell, I had to tell them where I was.

And yeah, it was going to be from a cell.

Thanks!

That was about five years ago. I don't know if "where you are" technology has improved since then.

Most cell phones these days (especially smartphones with GPS) will tell emergency operators where you are.

Hi I've had to call 911 myself within the last two weeks. Thought I needed to have a land line or they wouldn't be able to figure out where I was. I was wrong. The minute I dialed in to 911 - bam! There was a tracer signal placed that I could hear. The operator asked for the location of the problem (not my apartment, my insane neighbor down the hall). After I had hung up, about 30 seconds elapsed and there was a tone that indicated, I guess that the tracer had been hung up as well.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the info!

What did the tracer signal sound like?

Hi - from my end, it sounded like the beep I get when I have someone on the line waiting to come in, but the tone was a bit longer (one nanosecond? two nanoseconds? I'm not good at that kind of measuring). Same thing when the tracer was disconnected. Does that help? I wish I could explain it more clearly!

Have a great day!
