Odds and ends, but mainly bitching about my laptop

Saw an advertisement on g-mail for sending out bulk e-mails with 99% arrival *facepalm* Just what we need.
My computer is running soooo slow! It started when I shut down and restarted a few days ago. I got like 5 webpages that said welcome to Firefox! and Welcome to ____ for all of my add ons. So I lost all of my add on data (and Firefox refuses to remember what I change my settings back to). I did get to keep all of my bookmarks for some reason.
I am running a disk defrag/disk clean up on it now to see if that helps things.
And for ever I have had a problem with it connecting to the internet after I closed it. I would have to shut down Windows Explorer and Firefox, then restart them both, THEN I could get the internet to work. Though sometimes it would refuse to load a webpage and I would have to restart completely once that happened. Any idea why?
So, I am thinking about getting a new one, just because I would like to have one before this one gives up the ghost and I lose everything on it. Anyone have any recs for good laptops? I am thinking about a Dell again, which the total would be about 900 bucks for all the settings I want. But yesterday I was looking at Toshiba laptops and I could get almost the same settings for about 700 bucks. Suggestions?
