Ah, lot happening recently. Guess I will start with the most recent and work my way backwards.
We normally carpool once a year to the All Staff Day for Timberland library members. I think there were nearly 300 of us total this time. Carpool, driven by the Corine (my boss), passengers, Me (duh), Trish, Jan J., Julie, and Coleene. We met at the library at 7:45. I had to get up at 6 in the morning, which meant I had to be in bed by midnight....and I normally stay awake until 4am...so that was fun.
(judging by the above paragraph, I have a feeling this will be a lot of rambling, timline be damned)
Continental Breakfast was at 8:30. I ate before I left, so...I basically watched everyone else eat. Lew sat next to me with a few muffins, and commented, "No fruit this time? How will I ever stay regular?" Guy cracks me up. Last year there was fruit everywhere...not much this time.
Anywho, we were talked to/at for an hour or something, then we went to our first Session, which we picked out which two we wanted to go to last month. I had signed up to a Picturebook production thing, basically what all went into making the books for children. Turns out, the person had to cancel due to a family emergency. Our replacement was a lovely author called Kirby Larson who wrote the book Hattie Big Sky. She was wonderful to listen to and one of the highlights of the 8 hours I was there. She told us how she researched for the book, and a good deal about her childhood as well (though she forgot to mention why she flunked boys' PE).
Afterwards was lunch. Partway through that, I heard the booksigning was set up, so I wandered over there to scope out the price. Ended up talking to the author for a little bit (which I believe was the most I had talked to a single person the whole time I was there). Nice relaxing conversation. Found out that she is going to be trying NaNoWriMo this year!
Ended up buying the book. She had read a bit of it during the session and it sounded interesting, though not quite the genre I normally read. I think my grandma would really enjoy it, so I will let her borrow it.
Back to lunch. I pretty much sat there and laughed at other people's conversations.
This is one event where I really hate being antisocial. I am recognizing more and more faces each year, which is kinda cool :D A few people came up to me to talk for a few minutes.
After lunch was the second session. I had picked The ABCs of GEN XYZ...which was about cool cutting age fiction/non fiction for 20-something patrons. I seriously wanted to cause myself an injury so I could get out of it. Urban fiction, gangster type, other wierd crap I wouldn't even think to read...ew. From what I have seen being checked out for my generation, this is on the short list.
So, an hour long time spent wanting to keep my eyes closed each time I blinked.
Then awards were given to employees who had been working 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 years. Corine was a 5 and Trish was a 10.
After that and recognizing everyone, there was a boring question/answer session with some of the tech people.
Then this guy who does recorded books came to speak. He was quite interesting and did a reading from a Juvenile book, a Young Adult, and an Adult book. All were quite hilarious and my table was in hysterics laughing. I was looking around and there were some groups not even cracking a smile. I have no idea how they could not be amused.
One of the stories were these two young people taking their dog to a training seminar, and how it was misbehaving and running around--owner skidding behind--to sniff all the other dogs.
Then we got to leave.
Corine won one of the raffle drawings, and got a bag of books that were advanced copies.
Oh, and I have a habit of sitting with my hands clenched around something, whether it be my arm, or shirt, so I was so tense after this was all over.
I liked the building much better than last year. The seating arrangement was at tables, instead of booths.
Bah, I'm tired of typing now lol.
Sunday was 5 hours over at Centralia library. I think I mentioned I am doing all the Sundays this year? Working 5 hours, getting paid for 8. Kinda fun.
One of the things I do is sort the books into boxes in the back room for the courier people to take them away to their libraries. Well...the person who had stacked the ones from the day before did...well, a shitty job of it. With only a few minutes rearranging the books in the boxes, I could create hald again as much space. And most of them were lopsided, which the courier people hate because they tend to tip over while in transport. (the boxes are these plastic ones...open tops, so they stack one on top of each other) So I spent an hour dragging boxes around to repack the books. Like a giant puzzle. But damn frustrating that the people who packed them before care so little about what they are doing.
Guess that about the only thing of note for Sunday
We got two new cellphones to replace our old ones that don't work very well. Renewed our 2 year contract, so got them for 40 bucks. Got 2 camera phones, which are fun to play with. Technically, one is Mom's and the other Dad's, but Mom only goes to town on Thursdays, so I can carry this one with me every day but then. Mom is only letting me take 4 pictures a month--costs 25 cents per each to send them to myself. I wonder which one will take better pictures...
Okay, fingers tired
